Modern conventional farming methods may produce larger yields but what about the environment? Chemicals sprayed on farmland kill weeds and insects, but have potential to end up in the groundwater and run-off into nearby streams and lakes. Modern organic farming techniques rely on thoughtful farm design and management practices to create strong ecosystems. There are natural alternatives to dealing with the common problems that face farmers. For instance, proper crop rotation and composting manure to supplement the soil and supply the necessary nutrients that plants require, eliminating chemical fertilizer. Organic farms are often quite small. That’s because many of them are family-owned and operated. We feel strongly about supporting these family-owned businesses. They build communities and strengthen economies across Canada. | ||||||||||||||||
