Limestone Stables – The Groenewegen Family

Limestone Stables, just north of Kingston, Ontario is home to Francis and Kathie Groenewegen and their 2 children.

The Groenewegens milk about 30 Holstein and Jersey cows, which are fed mostly organic pasture grass for seven months of the year. During the colder months, the cows eat organic barley, corn, peas, balage, and kelp, and are turned out every day to exercise and socialize. Homeopathic remedies are used to keep the cattle healthy.

In addition to their dairy herd, Francis and Kathie also raise organic chickens, eggs, turkeys, beef, pork and champion warm-blood horses.  They are active in the local farm community, working on such issues as rebuilding the local food system, preserving farmland.

Francis served 3 years on the Organic Meadow Co-operative Board of Directors. "Our farm was certified in 2002,” he says. “We transitioned to organic for a more meaningful, healthy way of farm life, and we are very happy we did."
